FreeWave Expands the WaveContact Portfolio with the a Smart Gateway and Two New Field Sensors

A cloud-ready gateway and new methane and H2S monitoring nodes help operators modernize industrial monitoring without replacing existing infrastructure.

Boulder, Colo., July 23, 2026. FreeWave Technologies today announced three additions to its WaveContact® product line, each designed to help industrial operators modernize field monitoring using the infrastructure they already have in place. The new WC900 Smart Gateway is a cloud-ready aggregation platform that consolidates wireless and wired field signals into a single data stream. It is joined by two new field nodes: the WC70i methane emissions monitor and the WC70i LCD H2S gas detection transmitter.

A unified platform for existing infrastructure

The WC900 is a drop-in replacement for the current WaveContact gateway and supports the protocols already in use across most industrial operations. Modbus TCP, EtherNet/IP, and MQTT/Sparkplug are included as standard, with no licensing required for the MQTT publish path. The gateway consolidates wireless WaveContact devices, Modbus units, and field I/O into a single, adaptable data stream that can be delivered to SCADA systems, cloud platforms, or remote monitoring environments without a full infrastructure replacement.

The WC900 is engineered for demanding field conditions. Average power consumption below 50mA supports solar-powered installations, and tag capacity scales to 30,000 Modbus points for large deployments. Remote shutdown logic supports up to 128 configurable rules, enabling local automation at the edge and reducing dependence on round-trip communication with the control room. Expansion modules provide additional analog and relay outputs, and remote nodes and HART devices can be configured wirelessly through PACTware, Fieldcare, or Radar Master. Security is provided through TLS 1.2 on the MQTT brokers and 128-bit AES encryption on the wireless link.

Together, these capabilities allow operators to modernize existing monitoring systems rather than replace them.

Two new field monitoring nodes

The WC70i methane emissions monitor uses a MEMS gas sensor with a detection range of 50 to 1,000,000 PPM and 1 PPM resolution. It ships factory calibrated, is poison resistant, and is designed for service lifetimes exceeding 15 years with no field calibration required. The monitor communicates over a 900 MHz link to the WaveContact gateway at ranges up to one-half mile, and its 72Ah battery supports 44 to 48 months of operation in emissions mode. With an IP67 rating and Class I Division 1 certification, the WC70i is built for long-term unattended deployment at remote sites, where its low power consumption reduces the frequency of required site visits.

The WC70i LCD provides continuous H2S monitoring with full field operation built into the device. A local LCD, a sealed five-button keypad, and two alarm LEDs allow technicians to perform zero and span calibration, bump tests, and alarm checks on site, without a laptop, handheld programmer, or magnetic tools, and in Class I Division 1 environments. The transmitter reports gas concentration and sensor health to the supervisory system and operates for 24 months on a field-replaceable 72Ah battery pack.

An integrated monitoring system

The WC70i sensors capture and transmit field measurements, and the WC900 aggregates and translates that data for the operator’s systems. Readings are delivered to the supervisory system over Modbus at the gateway and can be published to cloud platforms over MQTT/Sparkplug as needed. Paired with a FreeWave long-range radio or a FreeWave Zum series device, the same data can reach sites that were previously impractical to connect, providing a single path from field sensor to operational dashboard using existing infrastructure.WaveContact portfolio image
