FREEWAVE TECHNOLOGIES’ EXPERT TO DISCUSS PIPELINE INTEGRITY AUTOMATION

FreeWave’s David Southern to explain how technology can address regulatory needs through monitoring and reporting via SCADA systems at CBM Fair 2007

WHO:             David Southern is a Product Development Manager for FreeWave Technologies, a leading designer and manufacturer of spread spectrum wireless solutions.

Southern has 25 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, hazardous waste remediation, petrochemical and refining industries. Prior to joining FreeWave, he was a Business Manager for an Emerson Process Management representative. In 1978, as a summer intern on an offshore oil production platform, Southern learned firsthand the basics of corrosion prevention and the everyday importance cathodic protection plays in mission critical operations. Southern authored/coauthored several U.S. patents, and has been published in several industry magazines, including POWER magazine, American Oil & Gas Reporter and Compressor Tech II magazine. He is a graduate of the School of Mines, Montana.

WHAT:           Pipeline Integrity Automation

Energy and Pipeline Companies wrestle to meet new stricter state and federal pipeline integrity requirements while simultaneously trying to control operating costs. Recent, unfortunate, pipeline news events pushed corrosion and cathodic protection to front page news across the nation to the extent that the U.S. Congress and several states passed legislation directed specifically toward cathodic protection practices. Many companies are looking to new technologies and automation for answers. Unfortunately, ever changing cell phone technologies left some companies scrambling to stay ahead of telemetry obsolescence. Effective answers to critical issues affecting public safety are often found in a combination of both old and new technology.

This presentation will focus on how SCADA can automate the monitoring of pipeline integrity and explain how Cathodic Protection monitoring field devices automatically collect and report mission critical, corrosion prevention data and transmit that data back to the central SCADA system via wireless, radio modems--often using companies’ existing radio networks.
